Attack on the Capitol Building in Washington, DC: What We’ve Long Feared
By: Amy Spitalnick BlogAs I write, white supremacists and other far-right extremists are violently storming the U.S. Capitol Building.
This is nothing less than an attempted coup, forcing Congress to stop the certification of election results and evacuate the building. My heart is with the elected officials, staff members, media, and others at risk by these terrorists.
Yet as horrific and shocking as this is, it’s also sadly unsurprising.
Today is the result of years of far-right conspiracy theories, disinformation, and outright calls to arms by President Trump and his supporters.
There is a direct line from the racist violence and terror in Charlottesville three and a half years ago, to the racist violence and terror in Washington, DC today.
And this is not going to simply disappear come January 20th; these extremists may no longer get their marching orders from the White House, but this poison runs deep. White supremacist and other far-right violence remains one of the most dire threats to our communities and our security.
The only path forward is accountability for these violent extremists terrorizing our country.
That is what we’re doing at IFA, bringing to justice the leaders and hate groups at the center of the violent white supremacist movement through our Charlottesville lawsuit. Trial will be held later this year.
So if you’re terrified watching today’s news, know that you are not powerless. We can and we are using our justice system to hold these extremists to account—and send a crystal clear message of the very real consequences for this violent hate.
